Early in her career, the American artist Cindy Sherman (b. 1954) was considered one of the leading appropriation artists, and helped to revolutionize international contemporary art in the late 70s. Sherman was one of the first appropriation artists to be included in the Astrup Fearnley Collection, and over time has become one of the best represented individual artists.

The artwork printed on the Art Bag Cindy Sherman is inspired by the silver gelatin print Untitled Film Still which was part of the black and white Film Stills photographs that Sherman made between 1977 and 1980, and is considered to be her first work as a mature artist. The images looks like press photos taken on a film set, and can be read as an encyclopedic review of female roles inspired by 1950s and 60s Hollywood, film noir, B-movies and European art films. There are clear references to both famous directors and actors, but the images do not relate to real films. Instead, Cindy Sherman has taken the post-war cultural styles and icons as a starting point. The film stills helped establish Cindy Sherman as one of the most significant and influential artists of her generation and laid the foundation for a career that continues to fascinate, provoke and surprise.

As an extension of most of the exhibitions shown at Astrup Fearnley Museet, it has become a tradition to design special editions tote bags known as Art Bags. The graphics for the Art Bags have been designed and developed by Astrup Fearnley Museet and have been approved by the exhibiting artist or curator. As part of a limited edition, you won’t find these bags anywhere else.
