Astrup Fearnley Collection has always concentrated on individual works and artists, rather than on movement or historical periods. The museum’s unique collection of international contemporary art is a selective collection of works created by artists who occupy key positions in the field, either because they have created a distinctive visual language, objects and images with great originality and quality, or because they have reinvented important aspects of cultural production. Over the last decade, the museum has focused intensely on American contemporary artists – Jeff Koons, Richard Prince, Cindy Sherman, Matthew Barney and younger artists such as Paul Chan, Frank Benson, Nate Lowman and Dan Colen, to name a few. In Sao Paolo they will be among the American artists who are exhibited , with Damien Hirst as the guest of honor. The museum wants this extensive exhibition, ‘In the Name of the Artists – American Contemporary Art from the Astrup Fearnley Collection’, to show a selection of works that focus on key established, contemporary artists who still are active and a wide range of young American artists. Several of the artists are represented with a number of works and have participated in the design of the parts of the exhibition showing their art. In that sense, the exhibition will include a number of smaller solo shows. Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art has a long tradition in cooperating with various international institutions, organizing international exhibitions and lending works from the collection to the leading museums and exhibition sites around the world. It was a great honor when Heitor Martins, president of the Sao Paulo Biennale, took the initiative to organize this exhibition from the Museum’s collection in Sao Paulo.
