B16: Sensing the Deep | Dance Performance

Sensing the Deep is an embodied conversation and reflection on Cauleen Smith’s exhibition The Deep West Assembly.

This experimental and exploratory improvisation is performed by three dynamic and charismatic dancers: Jasmin Lindstrøm (alias Jazzy), Yurley Larsen (alias Yurleyley) and Amalie Sasha Schanke, all members of the B16 Collective in Oslo.

As we accompany the dancers through the exhibition, we bear witness to the themes, emotions, and inspirations that emerge. We are granted the privilege of engaging with their process and how their experiences as racialized Black bodies in Norway resonate with Cauleen Smith’s work, which delves into concepts of geological time and Blackness, Afrofuturism, memory, history, literature, and the environment.

Sensing the Deep is included in the entrance ticket to the exhibition.

Sensing the Deep is part of the public program for the exhibition The Deep West Assembly. The program is a collaboration between Cauleen Smith and Ayesha Jordan with contributions from ASSATA, Jelsen Lee Innocent, Nora Mamdu, Jessica Lauren Elizabeth Taylor, The Free Black Women’s Library, Waldane Walker and members of B16 Collective: Jasmin Lindstrøm (alias Jazzy), Yurley Larsen (alias Yurleyley) and Amalie Sasha Schanke.
