Panel Discussion: Material Shifts

Material Shifts utstillingsplakat

Brad Kronz, Olga Balema og Kaare Ruud; Moderated by Owen Martin

Bringing together three artists whose work is included in Material Shifts, this conversation explores sculpture as a process of translation: the movement of materials, images, memories, objects, and ideas from one state into another. While their practices differ significantly, Brad Kronz, Olga Balema, and Kaare Ruud have each developed singular techniques that amend existing, found objects and images as well as newly fabricated materials.

The provisional forms and translucent materials of Olga Balema’s work embrace conceptual openness, allowing sculpture to remain in dialogue with its environment and registering the passage of time. Kronz has developed a formal language that reframes shared cultural references, entangling the position of the viewer and the artist and questioning how we look at and understand objects. Ruud transforms everyday materials through subtle shifts in scale, language, and association, drawing connections between memory, autobiography, and sculpture.

Together, the artists will discuss material translation, the role of viewers, and how sculpture continues to generate new relations between objects, images, and space.
