I over et ti\u00e5r har konsept- og performancekunst v\u00e6rt dominert av deltakende kunst. Dens forkjempere, som den franske kuratoren Nicolas Bourriaud (som fant opp begrepet “relasjonell estetikk” for \u00e5 beskrive det) og den amerikanske kunsthistorikeren Grant Kester, mener at ved \u00e5 oppmuntre et publikum til \u00e5 delta, kan kunstneren fremme nye frigj\u00f8rende sosiale relasjoner. Denne reiseruten tar inn futurisme, Dada, situasjonisme, tsjekkoslovakiske hendelser og argentinsk konseptualisme, og avsluttes med samtidskunstnere som Thomas Hirschhorn, Tania Bruguera og Jeremy Deller. Siden hennes kontroversielle essay i Artforum i 2006, har Claire Bishop v\u00e6rt en av f\u00e5 som har avsl\u00f8rt de politiske og estetiske begrensningene til dette arbeidet.<\/p>\n

I Artificial Hells unders\u00f8ker hun ikke bare p\u00e5standene om demokrati og frigj\u00f8ring som kunstnerne og kritikerne stiller for verket, men stiller ogs\u00e5 sp\u00f8rsm\u00e5l ved vendingen til etiske (snarere enn kunstneriske) kriterier som er invitert av slik deltakende og samarbeidende kunst.<\/p>\n

Claire Bishop er f\u00f8rsteamanuensis i avdelingen for kunsthistorie ved CUNY Graduate Center, New York. Hun er forfatter av Installation Art: A Critical History<\/em> og redakt\u00f8r av Participation<\/em>. I 2008 var hun medkurator for utstillingen Double Agent<\/em> p\u00e5 ICA. Hun er en jevnlig bidragsyter til Artforum, October, Tate Etc, IDEA og andre internasjonale kunstmagasiner.<\/p>\n
