In this exhibition we ignore traditional art historical categories and present unexpected and aesthetic combinations. The artworks cover a wide range of pictorial expressions; from Asger Jorns’ Expressionism to Warhol’s Pop Art;…

The exhibition is thus also suited to contextualize the separate exhibitions of Nate Lowman, Bjarne Melgaard and Gardar Eide Einarsson shown on the Museum’s ground floor during the same period.

Each artwork functions by virtue of its own qualities, but at the same time, can suggest some art historical developments. The early 1960s witnessed renewed interest in textual and pictorial references in painting. Pop Art incorporated recognizable elements from everyday culture in its pictures and initiated a new discussion about the artist-subject’s status in the age of mass-production. Twenty years later Appropriation artists once again re-evaluated the artists’ role, conceiving the artist as a mediator and manipulator of existing visual impressions. Several artists drew upon photographic media and thematically treated the abundance of pictures from advertisements and the entertainment industry.

Parallel to the development of a pictorial expression inspired by existing visual references, we find in the exhibition several good examples of expressive painterly declarations. We have included both the abstract planer painting and the figurative-expressive-painterly expression as key exponents for our era’s pictorial art. Amongst the younger, so-called Post-Conceptual artists, we also find works that can be experienced as comments on the abstract painting’s position in recent art history.

The exhibition reflects Astrup Fearnely Collections’ character inasmuch as it contains works with a clear narrative character cutting across art historical categories and generations. We hope the surprising artistic encounters will be inspiring and engaging. The following artists are included in the exhibition: Karel Appel, Eduardo Arroyo, Peter Blake, Mike Bouchet, Lizzi Bougatsos, Dan Colen, Jim Dine, Carroll Dunham, Gardar Eide Einarsson, Ida Ekblad, Erró, Matias Faldbakken, Karl Haendel, Richard Hawkins, David Hockney, Fabrice Hybert, Olav Christopher Jenssen, Asger Jorn, Martin Kippenberger, R. B. Kitaj, Jeff Koons, Paul McCarthy, Bjarne Melgaard, Cady Noland, Sigmar Polke, Richard Prince, Gerhard Richter, Paul Rebeyrolle, Sterling Ruby, Torbjørn Rødland, Cindy Sherman, Mari Slaattelid, Josh Smith, Bjørn-Sigurd Tufta, Vladimir Velickovic, Andy Warhol, Christopher Wool and Aaron Young.

Curators: Gunnar B.
