What does it mean to be an artist in an underdeveloped country? This question preoccupied Beatriz Gonz\u00e1lez and many of her Latin American contemporaries throughout the 1960s and 1970s, at a time when artists across the region were questioning imported ideas of modernity, progress and artistic value.\u00a0 <\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

In connection with the exhibition Beatriz Gonz\u00e1lez<\/em> and its accompanying publication, curator and art historian Julieta Gonz\u00e1lez will give a lecture based on her essay The Joy of Underdevelopment<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Taking the essay as a point of departure, Gonz\u00e1lez will explore how Beatriz Gonz\u00e1lez engaged critically and often humorously with ideas of underdevelopment, cultural dependency and the relationship between centre and periphery. The lecture will consider how Gonz\u00e1lez transformed images from Western art history, popular culture and the Colombian press, developing an artistic language rooted in the particular social, political and visual realities of Colombia. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Julieta Gonz\u00e1lez<\/strong>\u00a0(b. Caracas, Venezuela)\u00a0is Head of Exhibitions at the Wexner Center for the Arts in Columbus, Ohio, and Curator-at-Large for Modern and Contemporary Art at the Museu de Arte de S\u00e3o Paulo.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She works at the intersection of anthropology, cybernetics, architecture, design, ecology and the visual arts, with a special interest in decolonial aesthetics in Latin America and the Global South. She has organised more than eighty exhibitions internationally. Her essays have been published in books, exhibition catalogues, magazines and journals, including The Joy of Underdevelopment<\/em> in the publication accompanying Beatriz Gonz\u00e1lez<\/em>. She holds an MA in Cultural Studies and Critical Theory from Goldsmiths, London, was a Helena Rubinstein Fellow at the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program, New York, and studied architecture at Universidad Sim\u00f3n Bol\u00edvar, Caracas, Venezuela, and the \u00c9cole Nationale Sup\u00e9rieure d\u2019Architecture Paris-Villemin, France. <\/p>\n\n\n
