In connection with the exhibition Beatriz González and its accompanying publication, curator and art historian Julieta González will give a lecture based on her essay The Joy of Underdevelopment. 

Taking the essay as a point of departure, González will explore how Beatriz González engaged critically and often humorously with ideas of underdevelopment, cultural dependency and the relationship between centre and periphery. The lecture will consider how González transformed images from Western art history, popular culture and the Colombian press, developing an artistic language rooted in the particular social, political and visual realities of Colombia.

Julieta González (b. Caracas, Venezuela) is Head of Exhibitions at the Wexner Center for the Arts in Columbus, Ohio, and Curator-at-Large for Modern and Contemporary Art at the Museu de Arte de São Paulo. 

She works at the intersection of anthropology, cybernetics, architecture, design, ecology and the visual arts, with a special interest in decolonial aesthetics in Latin America and the Global South. She has organised more than eighty exhibitions internationally. Her essays have been published in books, exhibition catalogues, magazines and journals, including The Joy of Underdevelopment in the publication accompanying Beatriz González. She holds an MA in Cultural Studies and Critical Theory from Goldsmiths, London, was a Helena Rubinstein Fellow at the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program, New York, and studied architecture at Universidad Simón Bolívar, Caracas, Venezuela, and the École Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture Paris-Villemin, France.
