Soft Whispers in the Birch Wood, 1984-85
As a step in the museum's programme of annual large-scale presentations of important Norwegian contemporary artists, this year's choice is the painter Leonard Rickhard. It will be Leonard Rickhard's most extensive exhibition ever, and will cover his production from the mid-1970s until today.
Leonard Rickhard, born in 1945, has gradually gained a very special place in Norwegian contemporary art. His paintings are characterized by balanced compositions and harmonized colours in a subdued light. His subjects are landscapes that may seem to be idyllic and interiors that may seem peaceful in their simplicity and quietude. There is, however, a lurking tension in the pervasive stillness, a feeling that something dramatic has just happened or is about to happen. Rickhard's pictures are like beautiful, tranquil and emotionally charged sounding boards.
